Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Wayne Gacy are among the thousands born at Chicago’s Edgewater Hospital. Originally built to look and operate like a 5-star resort, the hospital was the city’s premiere medical institution for decades — it even treated celebrities like Frank Sinatra and John Wayne. But in 1989, a new owner took over and made drastic changes. During the 1990s and 2000s, Edgewater Hospital resorted to just about anything to fill up its beds. Along with hospitalizing senior citizens who weren’t sick, Edgewater Hospital staff paid people to fake illnesses in order to admit them and ring up their bills. This insurance fraud scheme was designed to pad the hospital’s bottom line…but turned fatal for multiple patients.
The government spent years investigating, documenting and compiling evidence to stop the scheme. But would it be enough to put those responsible behind bars? In this true crime podcast series, former employees, investigators and patients recount the fraud and lawlessness that took over Edgewater Hospital during the 1990s and 2000s.
If the Walls Could Talk, they would proudly share the years of good medicine before breaking into tears recounting the unthinkable crimes that happened during the hospital’s final years.
