If the Walls Could Talk Podcast - Trademark

Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Wayne Gacy are among the many born at Chicago’s Edgewater Hospital.

Originally built in 1929 to look and operate like a 5-star hotel, Edgewater Hospital served as the city’s premiere medical institution — it even treated A-List celebrities like Frank Sinatra and John Wayne. But everything changed when a new owner purchased the hospital in 1989.

During the 1990s and 2000s, Edgewater Hospital resorted to just about anything to fill up its beds. Along with hospitalizing senior citizens who weren’t sick, hospital staff concocted a scheme to pay people to fake illnesses…simply to ring up their medical bills. Money started pouring into the hospital before everything unraveled. Multiple patients died.

The government spent years investigating and compiling evidence to stop the fraud. The FBI even had doctors wearing wires. But would all that be enough to put those responsible behind bars?

In this true crime podcast series, former employees, investigators and patients recount the greed and lawlessness that took root.

If the walls of Edgewater Hospital could talk, they would tell of the lives they welcomed in — and the lives they watched be destroyed.

I Hope They Make a Movie!
I just finished listening to the podcast series called "If the Walls Could Talk" on Spotify about the horrific practices going on at the Edgewater Hospital in the 80's and 90's. Doctors performing unnecessary surgeries on elderly people for money. There were so many twists and turns to this story. A must hear! I hope they make a movie!

A story I’m shocked I hadn’t heard of
I read the article on Block Club Chicago about this podcast and was immediately intrigued. This podcast offers a deep dive into a piece of Chicago history that isn't known to many. As healthcare continues to evolve, the lessons from Edgewater’s closing are more pertinent than ever. Great work!

I Enjoy The Pod
A Compelling Chicago Story I learned about the program on The WGN Morning News where the presenters were interviewed. As a lifelong resident of Chicago I had vague memories of the scandal. The pod is fascinating, well produced and presented.

Episode 8 is a MASTERPIECE!
Just finished listening to it - it brought up numerous emotions in me as a former employee! I went between heartbroken, panic-stricken(esp during the discussion about the hyperbaric chamber), and triumph! Great job, Stephani and Todd! Cannot WAIT until next Sunday!

I spent over a decade working with Edgewater Hospital as an outside vendor. I had front row seats to the unfortunate saga. I worked with Dr Cubria, only becoming aware of the “scam” when I saw it aired on CBS. I have really enjoyed the this highly accurate and well done Podcast

Love it - engaging story and a bit of a walk down memory lane!
I grew up in the Edgewater/Andersonville neighborhood where Edgewater hospital was located. The history of the hospital was something that I was familiar with but didn't know all the details. The podcast is fascinating and also captivating because I know some of the people who were interviewed or mentioned. Great deep dive! I'm also a Patreon subscriber - worth it!

A Compelling Chicago Story
A Compelling Chicago Story Stephani and Todd went from being curious about an abandoned hospital in their neighborhood to doing a deep dive into the history of the building and its founder, and walking the listeners through the rise and fall of a once-prominent healthcare institution. Their story telling is kind and clever, and they do a great job of keeping the listener interested and wanting more. If you enjoy Chicago stories, or just enjoy stories about the healthcare industry, or just want to listen to a compelling true crime story, this podcast won’t disappoint.
