Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Wayne Gacy are among the many born at Chicago’s Edgewater Hospital.
Originally built in 1929 to look and operate like a 5-star hotel, Edgewater Hospital served as the city’s premiere medical institution — it even treated A-List celebrities like Frank Sinatra and John Wayne. But everything changed when a new owner purchased the hospital in 1989.
During the 1990s and 2000s, Edgewater Hospital resorted to just about anything to fill up its beds. Along with hospitalizing senior citizens who weren’t sick, hospital staff concocted a scheme to pay people to fake illnesses…simply to ring up their medical bills. Money started pouring into the hospital before everything unraveled. Multiple patients died.
The government spent years investigating and compiling evidence to stop the fraud. The FBI even had doctors wearing wires. But would all that be enough to put those responsible behind bars?
In this true crime podcast series, former employees, investigators and patients recount the greed and lawlessness that took root.
If the walls of Edgewater Hospital could talk, they would tell of the lives they welcomed in — and the lives they watched be destroyed.
