If the Walls Could Talk Podcast™ – Bonus Episode: “Edgewater Hospital History”

Edgewater Hospital’s half century of providing good medicine gets buried by the fraud and lawlessness that happened during its final decade — the years when Peter Rogan owned and then managed the hospital.

This Bonus Episode: “Edgewater Hospital History” features numerous former employees who share their stories of the hospital’s better days. They’ll share more about Edgewater Hospital’s co-founder, Dr. Maurice Mazel, the iconic hyperbaric chamber and the handful of movies and TV shows filmed there. Hear why a nurse almost stopped someone who walked through one of the units one afternoon — until she realized it was Kurt Russell.

After Dr. Mazel died in 1980, we heard stories of fraud and scandal — but also tales of the hospital being haunted. Many reported seeing ghosts and things that could not be explained. One nurse shared how she was nearly trapped behind some storage shelves — after they unexpectedly moved. Hear why the hospital’s intercom system keep turning on…even after the hospital closed.

One Urban Explorer also shares video and audio of a mysterious growling sound (watch and hear it HERE). He’ll try to make sense of what happened and why he didn’t even notice it.

Matt Perry from the Chicago Paranormal Investigators did some ghost hunting outside the hospital back in 2019 and presents what he uncovered.

Adam Pearson photographed the “Pink Building” — the only remaining structure from the Edgewater Beach Hotel — where Dr. Mazel once lived. Hear more history about the famous Edgewater Beach Hotel on the Chicago History Podcast and in a special bonus episode.

This feel-good episode sheds light on Edgewater Hospital’s glorious past…long before the greed and corruption rooted itself there during the 1990s and 2000s. Employees spoke of the hospital as “family” and share why the place remains so close to their hearts. This Bonus Episode: “Edgewater Hospital History” does not contain any spoilers to If the Walls Could Talk Podcast.

We’ll also talk with a woman who was a patient at Edgewater Hospital in 1950. Her vivid memories of the neighborhood and the hospital itself paint a remarkable picture of what Chicago was like back in 1950. She explains how she was able to explore the hospital and get up to the hospital’s solarium despite being just 9 years old.

Stephani and Todd also share more about the former Edgewater Beach Hotel and its affiliation to Edgewater Hospital. The iconic hotel once was where Hollywood came to play and stay and is the backdrop for the movie, The Natural starring Robert Redford.
