"Questions & Answers"
If the Walls Could Talk Podcast™
A struggling Chicago hospital did just about anything to admit patients. During the ’90s and 2000s, Edgewater Hospital performed hundreds of unnecessary heart surgeries on patients just to pad its bottom line. Multiple patients died. Hear what lengths the government went in order to stop the fraud and why many believe the owner got away with it. Former employees, patients, investigators, and urban explorers recount the tangled history of what happened within the walls of Chicago’s Edgewater Hospital.
Is one of Edgewater Hospital’s doctors sitting on death row? Why did Peter Rogan get such a short prison sentence? What happened to the hyperbaric chamber? In this jam-packed Q & A episode, we’ll answer those questions and a dozen others about the Edgewater Hospital saga. A panel of experts also discuss whether there could be another Edgewater Hospital.

Support us on PATREON and hear this week’s Second Opinion episode. Stephani and Todd answer a handful of questions about If the Walls Could Talk Podcast™ that came in after this episode originally aired. We’ll explore a curious lawsuit brought on against someone who spoke up against Edgewater Hospital and the curious connection between the lawyer who filed the lawsuit and Peter Rogan.
Kickbacks and scandals at Edgewater Hospital weren’t just limited to the years with Peter Rogan at the helm. They also happened during Dr. Mazel’s 50+ years of leading the hospital. Back in the 1960s, Mazel was accused of shaking down contractors for kickbacks and pocketing the money. Mazel claims he used the money to fund his research and further the growth of the hospital. He was charged with tax evasion and a trial followed. Stephani and Todd break down what ultimately happened and why the hospital punished him…only to reverse course shortly afterward.
A listener presented us with some fancy serving dishes and cups that once were used in the hospital’s private suites. They’re etched with the word “Mazel House”. We’ll share some pictures and reveal the odd place where he found them. We’ll also explain why a sound wave now hangs in our living room and why a photo of Edgewater Hospital now lives in our kitchen.
